Ah, the holiday season—the time of year when cookies become a food group, naps turn into a sport, and “just one more slice” becomes your daily mantra. We’ve all been there, living our best lives with endless feasts, Netflix marathons, and resolutions to “start fresh in January.”
But guess what? January is here, and while your running shoes might be giving you the side-eye for ignoring them, it’s time to dust them off and remind your muscles they have a job to do. Don’t worry, you’re not alone—we’re all shaking off the holiday cobwebs and trying to remember what a burpee is (or why we ever agreed to do them).
So, let’s hit the reset button together and make this comeback your best yet. It’s time to swap the gravy for gains and those cozy couch moments for some endorphin-packed sweat sessions. Let’s do this!

This is your chance to trade holiday naps for energy-boosting workouts and turn “holiday weight” into “new year strength.” Remember, your body isn’t mad at you—it’s just waiting for you to remind it how awesome it can feel. Let’s make this a comeback story worth cheering for!
Practical Tips To Get Your Groove Back.
Start Small.
Don’t scare yourself with a three-hour gym session on Day One. Instead, start with something simple, like a brisk walk or a dance party in your living room (yes, busting out your best moves counts as cardio). Think baby steps, not boot camp—your body will thank you, and your ego won’t be crying under a pile of sore muscles. Focus on building back your fitness a step at a time.
Set Realistic Goals.
Forget aiming for a six-pack by next week or crushing your 10km in under half an hour. Instead, focus on goals like working out three times a week or doing 10 push-ups without collapsing. Progress is progress, and setting achievable targets is the secret sauce to staying motivated and crushing it!
Schedule Workouts and Make It Fun.
Treat your workouts like a VIP meeting (with your future self). Pick a time, set a reminder, and show up—even if you’re tempted to reschedule for “never o’clock. Let’s be honest: if it’s not on your calendar, it’s not happening. Just as you need to plan accordingly it also helps to have a personal trainer who will hold you accountable.
Who said workouts have to be boring? Try a Zumba class, or go for a walk in Karura forest or in your neighbourhood. Rope in a friend to turn your gym session into a mini competition. Because nothing says “fun” like seeing who can do more squats without falling over.
One of my clients went from dreading the gym to loving it by simply focusing on how much better she felt with each session. You can too!

Focus on Nutrition.
Your body isn’t asking for a detox juice cleanse-it’s asking for some balance. Start small: swap soda for water, add a handful of veggies to your plate, or try a quick meal-prep recipe that doesn’t involve sacrificing your entire Sunday. Remember, fitness isn’t about extremes; it’s about consistency and sustainability. Nourish your body with intention, and you’ll be amazed at how small, mindful changes can lead to lasting results.
Track Progress.
Forget obsessing over the scale; focus on how you feel. Did you climb the stairs without gasping like a fish? That’s a win! Celebrate every little victory—it’s like collecting fitness badges for your journey back to glory.
